What to ask for this holiday season
For the Music Lover (like myself)
CD’s
-
NOW Volume 17 — This compilation features hit artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Jessica Simpson and Franz Ferdinand. Instead of buying separate CD’s and getting disappointed, get all of your favorites on one CD!
-
American Idiot by Green Day — You will not be disappointed by this album. Green Day brings back the rock opera with their newest effort. I own this album, and I’m addicted to the tracks American Idiot and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Caution: this album has a Parental Advisory for Explicit Content.
-
Beautifully Human by Jill Scott — You may remember Jill Scott’s first single/album, “Do You Remember? /Who Is Jill Scott?” She has a new album this year; you may have heard the groovy single “Golden.” Check out Jill Scott’s poetry against compelling rhythms.
Books
-
Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis — The Red Hot Chili Pepper spills the beans on his life and what it’s like to be a rock star. By the way, the title is from one of the band’s hits of the same name.
-
Tears for Water by Alicia Keys — I didn’t add Alicia’s book to my list only because her name is pronounced like mine, but because she writes great songs. Her poetry is just as thoughtful and deep.
-
The New Rolling Stone Album Guide — Need a resource for great music? Rolling Stone is the leader of the pack when it comes to music-oriented magazines. A reliable source.
Gadgets
-
iPod mini or iPod — I am a proud owner of an iPod and I’ll say that this is one of the best gadgets I have. I have all of my music stored on this device and I never go anywhere without it. You get 8 hours of continuous playback on the iPod and 20 or 40 gigabytes of storage. On the iPod mini, you get 4 gigabytes of storage.
-
Creative Labs Zen Micro — Now, don’t say that Creative is trying to copy Apple’s iPod, it’s got it’s own attributes. It has 5 gigabytes of storage and a removable battery. In addition, they’ve added a FM tuner.
For the Movie Lover
Movies
-
Star Wars Trilogy — I’m not a big fan of Star Wars, but a good portion of my friends are; this is recommended for any Star Wars lover.
-
Spider-Man 2 — Now you can own the summer blockbuster and watch it in the winter! See Spider-Man swing through New York battling Doc Ock.
-
The Shawshank Redemption — Although most people have never heard of this movie, it is excellent. It took a while for me to see it, but when I did, I wondered what took me so long. Experience one man’s journey through the judicial system and his quest for freedom.
Books
-
Roger Ebert’s Movie Yearbook 2005 by Roger Ebert — “Two Thumbs Up!” One of my favorite movie critics and one half of the critical duo Ebert & Roeper, Roger Ebert publishes a yearbook of movies for 2005.
-
Hollywood Picks the Classics by Afton Fraser — OK, I’m not the most knowledgeable about classic movies, but if I were to turn to a resource, it would be this book. Focusing on the Golden Age of movies, 1930 to 1960, it spans the genres of Film Noir, Romance, Good Guys/Bad Guys, and Dames and Damsels.
Gadgets
I like DVD/VCR players because it mixes the old with the new and conveniently meshes two machines into one. It’s like a Frankenstein of movie players, only better looking. Here are three recommendations after extensive research.
- Toshiba SD-V392
- JVC HR-XVC26
- Daewoo DVG-T844B
For the Book Lover
-
The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown — Follow Robert Langdon as he tries to solve a riddle found at a murder scene using clues seen in painting by Leonardo Da Vinci.
-
Citzen Girl by Emma McLaughlin, Nicola Kraus — A girl struggles to make it in a world where a college degree doesn’t offer as much opportunity as it once did. Once she lands her dream job, she concentrates on getting the job done ... whatever that may be.
-
Harry Potter Paperback Box Set — I am a very huge Harry Potter fan, but I already have all of the books. The only book that is paperback is the first one. This is perfect for getting caught up on Harry or finally owning all the books.
The world of audiobooks ...
