The Knitting Biker
By Anand Balasar

New York City is a unique place, one where a person could find something interesting no matter where they go. One such place is the popular NYC subway system. Riding on the train is an experience that every New Yorker has enjoyed, or regretted, at least once in his/her life. Some may find the things they see odd, , and others may think of it as just another occurrence, but either way, these experiences share their own unique quality, every time. Such was the case when a huge biker took a ride on the train, and left some of my friends and I stunned at what he began to do.

Picturing the typical biker-guy is easy for almost anybody; black leather, bandana, shades, huge Harley and all. These guys are the ones you say are “bad to the bone”,. Seeing one of these guys in the city is not strange in any way, but it gets strange when you see a guy in such attire riding the train.

Getting on the train, the man cleared a path with just the way he was dressed. He sat down and took off his book-bag, made of black leather, as was his jacket and most of his clothes. He reached into the book-bag, and one would expect him to produce a CD player, or an MP3 player, something to fit his look, instead what he uncovered was a bag full of knitting tools, needles, yarn and all. He sat there and began to knit, holding it up to his arm as if he were making a sweater for himself or someone about his size. I sat there, still stunned at what I was seeing, and began to think, “Wow, did I think wrong of this guy”.

An interesting experience once again. Being judgmental is not something that I do very often, but. I have never seen anything so simple that would leave me in such shock. As for my fellow writer, Alisha Magnus, she thought nothing of it but something to laugh about; good humor is always a plus.
